How the Japanese zodiac works
Unlike the Western zodiac (based on birth month), the Japanese zodiac — 干支 (eto) — is based on birth year. The cycle repeats every 12 years. Your zodiac animal is said to influence your personality, fortunes, and compatibility with others.
The zodiac came to Japan from China via Korea, probably around the 6th century CE. It's deeply embedded in Japanese culture: New Year's cards (年賀状 — nengajō) feature the coming year's animal, and people proudly identify with their zodiac sign.
ne — Rat / Mouse
Years: 2020, 2008, 1996, 1984
Clever, adaptable, quick-thinking. The Rat (ねずみ) came first in the zodiac by cleverly hitching a ride on the Ox's back. Associated with resourcefulness and charm. Lucky colour: blue.
ushi — Ox / Cow
Years: 2021, 2009, 1997, 1985
Diligent, dependable, patient. The Ox (牛 — ushi) arrived second — faithful and hardworking, it carried the Rat without complaint. People born in Ox years are said to be persistent and trustworthy, if sometimes stubborn.
tora — Tiger
Years: 2022, 2010, 1998, 1986
Bold, courageous, unpredictable. The Tiger (虎 — tora) is a powerful symbol of strength and bravery. Tiger years are considered dynamic and turbulent — significant events tend to happen. Tigers pair well with Horses and Dogs.
u — Rabbit
Years: 2023, 2011, 1999, 1987
Gentle, artistic, lucky. The Rabbit (兎 — usagi) is associated with grace and good fortune. In Japanese folklore, a rabbit lives on the moon pounding mochi — you can see it in the full moon's pattern. Rabbit people are said to be diplomatic and creative.
tatsu — Dragon
Years: 2024, 2012, 2000, 1988
The most auspicious zodiac sign. The Dragon (龍/竜 — ryū) is the only mythical animal in the zodiac, and Dragon years see exceptionally high birth rates in Japan — parents want Dragon children. Associated with luck, wisdom, and divine power. See the full Dragon kanji page →
mi — Snake
Years: 2025, 2013, 2001, 1989
Wise, intuitive, mysterious. The Snake (蛇/へび) is considered "little dragon" — intelligent and insightful but harder to read. White snakes (白蛇) are sacred in Japanese tradition. Snake people are said to be deep thinkers who trust their instincts. See the full Snake kanji page →
uma — Horse
Years: 2026, 2014, 2002, 1990
Energetic, free-spirited, independent. The Horse (馬 — uma) represents freedom and movement. Horse years are action-packed. Horse people are social, enthusiastic, and sometimes impatient. Horse racing (競馬 — keiba) is enormously popular in Japan. See the full Horse kanji page →
hitsuji — Goat / Sheep
Years: 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991
Gentle, artistic, empathetic. The Goat (羊 — hitsuji) is associated with calm creativity and group harmony. Goat years are considered peaceful. The same kanji 未 means "not yet" — reinforcing the Goat's association with potential and gradual development.
saru — Monkey
Years: 2028, 2016, 2004, 1992
Clever, witty, versatile. The Monkey (猿 — saru) is the trickster of the zodiac — intelligent, adaptable, and sometimes mischievous. Monkey years bring ingenuity and innovation. The three wise monkeys (三猿 — mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru) are one of Japan's most famous visual symbols.
tori — Rooster
Years: 2029, 2017, 2005, 1993
Punctual, observant, hardworking. The Rooster (鶏 — niwatori) is associated with diligence and precision. Roosters crow at dawn — reliable timekeepers. Rooster people are said to be detail-oriented and confident, sometimes to the point of perfectionism.
inu — Dog
Years: 2030, 2018, 2006, 1994
Loyal, honest, protective. The Dog (犬 — inu) is Japan's ultimate symbol of devotion — Hachikō the loyal Akita is its living embodiment. Dog people are trustworthy and always put others first. See the full Dog kanji page →
i — Boar / Pig
Years: 2031, 2019, 2007, 1995
Sincere, courageous, strong. The Boar (猪 — inoshishi) closes the cycle. Unlike the pig's associations in Western cultures, the boar in Japan is a symbol of bravery and determination — it charges forward without hesitation. Boar people are said to be honest and persevering.
How to find your zodiac sign
Divide your birth year by 12. The remainder tells you your sign:
- 0 = Monkey · 1 = Rooster · 2 = Dog · 3 = Boar
- 4 = Rat · 5 = Ox · 6 = Tiger · 7 = Rabbit
- 8 = Dragon · 9 = Snake · 10 = Horse · 11 = Goat
Example: 1990 ÷ 12 = 165 remainder 10 → Horse.
The zodiac in everyday Japanese life
New Year is the zodiac's biggest moment. 年賀状 (nengajō — New Year's cards) feature the upcoming year's animal, and post offices design special stamps around it. Shrines sell animal figurines and 絵馬 (ema — wooden wishing plaques) in the year's animal shape.
The phrase 干支 (eto) — your zodiac animal — comes up in casual conversation. Asking "あなたの干支は何ですか?" (What's your zodiac sign?) is a common, friendly way to guess someone's age without asking directly.
